Today’s discriminating home purchasers want to know they are investing their money wisely. It’s about more than the cheapest price or the most square feet. It’s about getting the most value out of your home purchase. S&A Homes has combined cutting edge technology and building practices to offer you a high performance home that is energy efficient, eco-friendly and healthier, which protects your investment, your family and the environment without sacrificing the value that has helped S&A Homes build more than 15,000 homes. The best part is…every home is an E-Home.
The HERS Index (Home Energy Rating System) was developed by RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network) and is the official measure of energy performance by the US Department of Energy. The lower the score, the more energy efficient the home is. An average HERS score for a code-built 10-Year old home is 130 while a code-built home today scores 100.
Compare that to the S&A E-Home, which features an average HERS score of 68 in natural gas communities and 77 in heat pump communities. The S&A E-Home is, on average, 37% more efficient than its 10-year old counterpart and 13% more efficient than an equivalent new home in a natural gas community. Just as you would never purchase a car without checking its MPG, you should never buy a home without verifying its HERS rating.
Outside Verification - Every S&A E-Home is scrutinized by an independent, third-party inspection agency to ensure that our homes meet the most stringent standards. Each homebuyer will receive a copy of their home’s verification summary & RESNET certificate with their home’s specific HERS Index Score from the inspection agency.
At S&A Homes, we care about the environment because we care about people. Conservation efforts help us build responsibly and give back to the community. Your home will include only the highest-quality products designed to reduce your carbon footprint, lower overall waste and conserve water. From the 100% recycled materials used in the carpet pad to the water conservation achieved through the Manabloc plumbing system, each product has been hand-picked to ensure it reduces harmful side effects to the environment. Additionally, we turn to local vendors whenever possible to lower our carbon footprint while passing along the savings to you.
All this talk about the environment is great, but how will you and your family benefit? Indoor air quality is at the forefront of our design and materials used. R-410a refrigerant and Low VOC paints and finishes dramatically reduce pollutants in your home. Even better, each home comes with a MERV 10 HVAC Air Filter, which is 30-40 times more effective than a standard MERV 3 filter included in most new homes. The MERV 10 Air Filter makes life easy again for allergy sufferers and helps filter out bacteria that would normally re-circulate through the home.
“ We can't say enough about the air flow efficiency of the home. Goodbye hot and cold spots! S&A staff works with you from beginning to end to ensure you are happy in your new home, like we are!”
-Scotty & Jenny - Pittsburgh
The proof is in the pudding, or so they say. HERS scores are helpful, but is it possible to actually see the S&A Difference? Actually, it is through the use of thermal imaging. Thermal Imaging measures serve as a quality control mechanism that uses the temperature differences in the home to provide an infrared image that easily identifies any air leaks, which can account for up to 50% of the heating inefficiencies in a home that has not properly sealed its windows, ductwork, doorways, and entry points for mechanicals.
The following images provide a visual representation of the heating and cooling efficiencies maintained in an S&A E-Home. While the purple and pink tones indicate heating and cooling efficiency, the yellow and orange tones represent potential air leaks and heat loss.

CODE COMPLIANT NEW HOME This image, taken from a newly constructed home that meets code requirements, shows how air is able to escape from a typical new home. The overall yellow tones in the photo indicate that there are significant air leaks and energy inefficiencies. The result? The individual who purchases a typical new home faces significantly higher utility bills and inequitable distribution of heat, making the home less comfortable and much more expensive.
